My Grown-Up Christmas List

Since I was a teenager and first heard Amy Grants rendition of this at a holiday concert Grown-Up Christmas List has always been my favorite Christmas song. I have not had much Christmas spirit since my grandparents passed away in 2006 and 2007 and I’ve had even less since Maggie was stillborn and then…yesterday happened.

There is no making sense of such a terrible tragedy. My head just cannot grasp the enormity of it all. 20 children are dead. How can this be? I grieve daily for my stillborn child and there are 20 sets of parents out there who had their angels murdered. My God. I just… that is all I have got. I will not mention it again on this blog. Not because I don’t care, but because I care too much.

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you
With childhood fantasies

Well, I’m all grown-up now
And still need help somehow.
I’m not a child
But my heart still can dream

So here’s my lifelong wish
My grown-up christmas list
Not for myself
But for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start,(and wars would never start)
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up christmas list

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something lovely
Wrapped beneath our tree.(wrapped beneath the tree)

Well heaven surely knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal
A hurting human soul

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up christmas list

What is this illusion called the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth
(There’d be)

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, oh
This is my grown-up christmas list
